PITTSBURGH – In response to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Mark Janus in Janus v. AFSCME, Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers President Nina Esposito-Visgitis released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court got the Janus decision wrong. Absolutely, terribly wrong. In the process, billionaire anti-union forces advanced their cause of hurting working people nationwide by attacking a union’s rightful ability to collect fair share fees—a precedent that’s stood for 40 years. We will not stand silent. We will be stronger together.

Across the nation, and in Pittsburgh, our union brothers and sisters are recommitting to the cause of better education, good pay, quality healthcare and fair treatment for all educators. We are determined to be stronger and more united in the face of these attacks.

We will be heard loud and clear at the ballot box in November, and at the upcoming National Convention in July in Pittsburgh.”

The Court’s decision in the Janus v. AFSCME case invalidates state laws allowing labor unions to collect fees from non-members in a bargaining unit to pay the costs of negotiations and other representation the union is required to provide to all employees.

The American Federation of Teachers 85th Convention will convene in Pittsburgh, from July 13th through 16th. A massive rally and march is planned for Saturday, July 14th across the city.

PFT400 is a union of professionals working to help our children learn, grow, and succeed in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Founded in 1935, PFT400 has been a leader in educational innovation and change in our public schools.
