There are always great things going on in our fantastic Career and Technical Education Programs! Just look—Information from our Innovation Fund Manager, Darcy Tyhonas (CTE):
As part of the AFT Innovation Fund Grant, awarded to the PPS CTE Division through the PFT, CTE is working to increase the awareness of CTE across the region. This includes reaching out to students, families, community members, and PPS staff. Below are a few initiatives aimed at meeting that goal.
City of Pittsburgh Career Fair
CTE has partnered with the City of Pittsburgh employment office to offer a career fair for 9th grade students on Thursday, October 12, 2017. This event will be held on the first floor of the City-County Building. By attending this fair, 9th grade students will learn about career opportunities through the City of Pittsburgh as well as how CTE programs can give them a jump start on a career pathway. During the event, CTE teachers and current senior CTE students will share information about CTE programs with 9th grade students while City of Pittsburgh representatives will share information about employment in the carpentry, HVAC, public safety, accounting, media production, and business fields. 2nd Annual CTE College and Career Fair
The CTE College and Career Fair will take place on December 20, 2017 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. 9th grade students will be able to learn about all 15 CTE programs and the post-secondary pathways available through PPS. During the event, CTE teachers and current senior CTE students will share information about career preparation opportunities available through CTE programs with 9th grade students. Post-secondary partners will be on hand to share options after high school. Click here for flyer.
8th Grade Tours of CTE Classrooms
By securing funds from a Partner 4 Work grant to offer tours of CTE classrooms, 8th grade PPS students will be able to learn about CTE program opportunities at an earlier age than previous initiatives allowed. Students will be invited to tour CTE classrooms. These tours will take place between November 2017 and February 2018. Tour dates will be chosen by building administration.
